DIRECTIONS TO THE FARM

Finca Las Hormigas is located near Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica, surrounded by lush jungle and regenerative farm systems. Whether you’re coming from San José or already in Puerto Viejo, there are a few ways to reach us.

 

Please read carefully to ensure a smooth arrival.

From San José to Puerto Viejo

By Bus (most affordable option)

 

The MEPE bus runs daily from San José to Puerto Viejo.

 

  • The journey takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours, and tickets cost around $15 - $20 USD.

  • Depart from Terminal Atlántico Norte in San José

  • We recommend checking the MEPE bus schedule in advance, which you can find here.
     

If you are arriving after 6:00 PM, you can stay overnight in Puerto Viejo and continue to the farm the next day.

By Shuttle (comfortable option)​
 

Several private and shared shuttle services offer direct trips from San José to Puerto Viejo.

​

  • The journey takes about 4.5 to 5 hours.

  • Prices range from $55-$70 USD per person.

  • Shuttles can be booked online in advance.
     

Recommended companies: Caribe Shuttle or Interbus.

From Puerto Viejo to the Farm

Once you arrive in Puerto Viejo, you have a few options to reach the farm:

By Bus
 

Take the local bus from Puerto Viejo to Gasolinera Sixaola (NOT Sixaola itself). The bus runs regularly, and the ride takes about 30 minutes.

⚠ Important: The bus drops off at Gasolinera Sixaola, NOT Sixaola town. We do not pick up in Sixaola, as it is a 1-hour detour for us.

From the gas station, you can either hike to the farm, or ask for a pick up ahead of time.

By Tuk Tuk or taxi

​

Tuk tuks are a quick and scenic way to reach the farm. They are available in Puerto Viejo and can take you directly to Finca Las Hormigas.

​

  • The ride takes about 20-30 minutes.

  • Prices vary depending on availability and driver. 

  • Tuk tuks will be able to drive up no problem, but taxis will depend on the driver and their fear of driving up the hill. ​

Important notes:

Finding the Entrance to the Farm: If traveling on your own, do not follow Google Maps directly to "Finca Las Hormigas," as it may take you the wrong way. Use this specific link instead: Las Hormigas Entry

 

If arriving late (after 6:00 PM): We recommend staying overnight in Puerto Viejo and coming to the farm the next day. You can either:

  • Take the bus to Gasolinera Sixaola and continue from there.

  • Arrange a pickup in Puerto Viejo if someone from the farm is available.

  • Take a tuk tuk directly to the farm in the morning.
